How to disable tool tips.

If the user places the mouse over a particular item on the desktop, a toll tip pops up. This displays and information about the icon. If you want to disable this tool you can use this simple tip.

  • Click Start, go to search box and type in regedit.
  • Browse for HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Currentversion/Explorer/Advanced registry key.
  • Click the Showinfo tipregistry key on the right pane.
  • Click Edit or Modify.
  • In the value data field change the value to “0”.
  • Close the registry window and reboot system and you are done.

Share a Drive.

In these speedy days you transfer huge files from one system to another. With vista this process is simple if you are connected with a LAN. To share your driver with another driver through network, use the following simple steps.

  • Open My computer.
  • Right click on a drive which you want to share and click the option Share.
  • Click on Advance sharing button.
  • Select the share this folder box.
  • Click OK.

Customize Send to menu.

You can customize “Send to” option in Vista.

§  Click Start, open run.

§  Type C:\users\accountname\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\sendto in the address bar.

Note: account name is your user account.

Now you can add a folder or delete any unwanted entries.

 

Modify Quick Launch icons.

 

This tip will help you to modify the quick launch buttons.

 

§  Right click on the quick launch pane and select View/large icons from the context menu this will help to increase the size of the quick launch icon.

§  Right click on the quick launch pane and select the Show text option, this will help to view text beneath icon.

 

 

XP as default OS.

 

Windows Vista has the option to use multiple OS. If you use windows XP you can set it as the default OS by giving the following simple command.

 

§  Go to Start and type cmd in the Search box.

§  The command prompt will appear type “bcdedit/default{ntldr}” and press enter. Now your default OS will be XP.

 

 

Disable Autoplay.

 

§  Click Start and go to Control panel.

§  Click on Play CD’s or other media automatically under the Hardware and Sounds.

§  Resulting window clear the “Use Autoplay for all media and devices” check box

§  After finish doing, click OK.

 

 

Disk cleanup shortcut.

 

Using this simple registry trick you can add the Disk cleanup option to the context menu. After using this you would find the Disk cleanup option the next time you right click a particular drive;

 

§  Go to Start and type regedit in search box.

§  Browse the “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT|Drive\shell” registry key.

§  Create a new key and name it “diskcleanup”.

§  Double click the string and type Disk cleanup in the Value data field.

§  Now create another key called Command.

§  Double click the string and type “cleanmgr.exe/d %1” in the Value data field.

§  After finishing above steps, restart your system and you are done.

These seem like great tips but I'm afraid to do anything with my computer or Vista. I've messed things up before and I'm not eager to repeat the experience. Think I'll leave that sort of thing to the professionals. :)
